Egon was always gong to be a pilot and he started very early in life. At age 9 he was catching rides with pilots at the Noarlunga airfield in South Australia, a dirt strip he had helped to build with his father. As soon as he legally could he went solo on his 16th birthday and got his private license at age 17. By 19 he had joined the RAAF as a pilot and went on to fly a wide variety of aircraft, including CT.4, Machi, Wingeels, HS748, BAC111’s and completed his service flying Forward Air Controller for the Hornets based at RAAF Williamtown.

He is now a QANTAS captain, who has progressed from flying Boeing 747’s to the Airbus 330. In his 30 years of aviation, he has logged over 15,000 hours flying time..

 

EEgon has owned some 22 different aircraft including a Russian Sukhoi Su-26 and three Pitts Specials. He has competed in aerobatic competitions within the Australian Aerobatic Club, rising from Sportsman level to Unlimited, and winning the Australian Intermediate Championship along the way.

CCurrently, when he is not at his day job, Egon operates Highland Warbirds from his own airfield in the Southern Highlands of NSW. He owns and operates a YAK-52 and a Nanchang CJ-6 with a M-14P powerplant, one of only two in the southern hemisphere. Originally refurbished and re-engined by Red Star Aviation, it remains one of the most striking aircraft you will see.V
